What is Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)?
A federal disability insurance program that pays benefits to workers and certain family members; provided they worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes.
How do I know if I am eligible?
You may be eligible if you
- have a medical condition that is expected to last longer than twelve (12) months; or
- have an injury that may result in death; and
- meet the "Recent work" qualification based on your age at the time you became disabled; and
- meet the "Duration of work" qualification based on the time you worked under Social Security at the time you became disabled
You may eligible if you are
- an adult child with a disability that started before age 22 and you qualify using the earnings record of a qualified party; or
- a certain type of family member of the disabled person

How do I apply?
You can:
- call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and schedule an appointment. You may request your appointment be conducted by phone or in person at your local Social Security office
- go to your local Social Security office. (without a prescheduled appointment the wait time can be substantial)
- logon to the Social Security website at: www.ssa.gov
